Why we lie in relationships

Ever found yourself automatically lying or hiding things from others? Without making a conscious decision – a NO comes out when the truth is YES. Or the YES comes out when it’s a NO.

“I’m on my way” (when we haven’t left the office)
“It’s okay” (when we’re clearly upset)
“Mm, that was nice” (when we wish it to be different)

We tend to either a) defend our right to tell “white lies” or b) judge ourselves for doing it. But I want to argue that telling the truth is more for yourself than anyone else.

Because the automated lying is just a symptom, a consequence of not feeling safe to share what we felt and wanted growing up. Of being made wrong and criticized, or simply afraid of it. But this protection mechanism is using a lot of energy, making you feel disconnected from others, and most importantly – is keeping the underlying belief and wound in place.

In this episode, we’re taking a good look at little automated lies. Not the ones that might make our break the relationship – but the ones that keep an old defensiveness in place.
