There’s a step that’s often neglected in our healing work: The emotional need that never was met, which caused the pain to begin with and was then followed by several protection mechanisms to not have to experience the pain again.
Part of protecting us from pain has been to deny that underlying need. To look at it and say: “That shouldn’t be there. IT is the problem.” To rationalize and say: “It wasn’t a big deal. I know my parents did the best they could.” While some of this might be true, what keeps getting neglected is the emotional need. It stays unmet.
And you stay in the experience of that younger version of you, without ever stepping into your full magnificent self.
